What is the Tax Identification Number (TIN) and how to find it?
The Tax Identification Number (TIN) is a unique number assigned by the government of your country of tax residence. It is used to identify each taxpayer for tax purposes. This number is essential for regulations like FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) and AEOI (Automated Exchange of Information), which require financial institutions to collect, and potentially transmit, tax information to the competent authorities.
Why does Nickel ask for your TIN?
At Nickel, regulatory compliance is paramount for the security of your transactions and for meeting our international obligations.
In accordance with international regulations (FATCA and AEOI), Nickel is required to collect information on the tax residence of its customers, including your TIN. This obligation allows us to participate in the fight against tax evasion and money laundering. By providing us with this information, you help us comply with these legal requirements and keep your account in good standing. This is why we regularly ask you to confirm or update your TIN.
How to find your TIN?
The TIN is a key element of your tax identity and may have different names depending on the country: tax number, personal identification number, social security number, etc. The TIN can be found on various official documents issued by your country's tax authorities, such as:
- Tax notice
- Identity card
Social security card
Where to get detailed information on TINs by country?
To help you identify and locate your TIN, the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) has made an exhaustive portal available. This portal lists the specific formats, names, and documents where the TIN can be found for each country.
We encourage you to consult this official resource, available here, for any specific information related to your country of tax residence.
